UK to EU men’s clothing sizes

For suits and jackets add 10 to the UK size (a 40 is an EU 50); for trousers add 16 to the waist (a 32 is an EU 48); for shirts the EU size is roughly the collar in centimetres (15.5 inches is EU 39). UK and US men’s sizes use the same numbers.

Men’s tailoring is sized by measurement in inches, so UK and US labels match and only the EU number needs converting.

That British Tweed Company, Moss and sizechart.uk all print EU as the UK/US number plus 10. Moss rounds the centimetres slightly differently (87 cm at 34, 92 cm at 36), so treat them as accurate to about 1 cm. Length (short, regular, long) is chosen separately. Letter sizes are not standardised: sizechart.uk maps M to 38 to 40, while Next lists M as a 39 to 41 inch chest.

This table is for tailored trousers; jeans are usually labelled by waist and leg (for example 32 W 32 L) and often run a little larger than the tape measurement.

John Lewis and Charles Tyrwhitt (EU site) agree on collar centimetres except at 17 inches (43.5 and 43). EU labels are rounded by hand: sizechart.uk lists 44 at 17.5 inches and 46 at 18 inches, while Charles Tyrwhitt lists 44.5 and 45.5. Sleeve length is a separate measurement.

Why brands still vary

A conversion maps one label to another; it cannot know how a brand cuts. A slim-fit and a classic-fit jacket can share the size 40 label and leave very different room across the chest, and stretch fabric changes how a waist size feels.

How to measure yourself

  1. Chest: measure around the fullest part, under the arms and across the shoulder blades, keeping the tape level.
  2. Waist: measure where you wear your trousers, not over a belt.
  3. Collar: measure around the base of the neck where the collar sits, with a finger’s room under the tape.

Compare those centimetres with the brand’s own chart, and read the fit notes; our page on what "true to size" means explains the common phrases.

A note for merchants

Shoppers search for conversions because a single size label does not tell them how a garment will fit. If you sell clothes online, publish a size chart in centimetres for each product, say whether it shows body or garment measurements, and add a short fit note. A free size chart template is a quick place to start. On Shopify, Rendered Fits recommends a size for each product from your own size chart, so shoppers do not need a converter; there is a Free plan.
