UK to US shoe sizes, and US to UK

Women’s: add 2 to a UK shoe size for the US size (UK 5 is US 7). Men’s: add 1 (UK 9 is US 10). Going from US to UK, take the same amount off. EU sizes run roughly 33 to 35 above the UK size and differ by up to a whole size between brands.

Next, Dr. Martens, ASOS, Nike and Johnston & Murphy (via Nordstrom) print US as UK plus 2. Clarks’ US site and John Lewis print it half a size higher (UK 5 as US 7.5).
EU sizes agree for UK 4 to 6. From UK 7 they split: ASOS and John Lewis print EU 40 for UK 7 and EU 41 for UK 8, while Next, Dr. Martens and Clarks print 41 and 42.
Half sizes rest on fewer sources, mainly Next, Clarks and Johnston & Murphy.

Next and Nike print US as UK plus 1. John Lewis prints it half a size lower (UK 9 as US 9.5).
Next, Clarks, Dr. Martens and Nike are within a size of each other on EU, and Nike tends to print the highest figure. John Lewis is an outlier at UK 7 (EU 40) and UK 12 (EU 46).
UK 7.5, 8.5, 10.5 and 11.5 rest on two sources each.

Why shoe sizes still vary

Each shoe is built on a last, the foot-shaped form it is made around, and lasts differ by brand and style. A trainer, a boot and a court shoe in the same size can fit differently even from one maker. Width is a separate measurement that a length conversion does not cover.

How to measure your feet

Stand on a sheet of paper with your heel against a wall.
Mark the tip of your longest toe, and measure from the wall to the mark in centimetres.
Measure both feet and use the longer one.

Foot length in centimetres is more reliable than any size label. Clarks, Dr. Martens and Nike all publish it, so compare your measurement with the brand’s chart.

A note for merchants

Shoppers search for conversions because a single size label does not tell them how a garment will fit. If you sell clothes online, publish a size chart in centimetres for each product, say whether it shows body or garment measurements, and add a short fit note. A free size chart template is a quick place to start.
