UK, US and EU clothing size converter

A UK women’s size 12 is usually a US 8 and an EU 40, and a UK men’s suit size 40 is usually an EU 50. Shoes are less tidy: a UK women’s 5 is normally a US 7 and an EU 38, while a US men’s 10 is a UK 9. These conversions are approximate and brands vary, so check the brand’s own measurements in centimetres before you buy.

Convert a size

Choose a category, the size system you have, and the size. The result comes from the same published tables shown further down this page, so it inherits their limits: conversions are approximate and brands vary.

The converter needs JavaScript. The size tables below work without it.

Nothing you choose here is sent anywhere. The converter runs in your browser.

Rules of thumb

  • Women’s clothing: US is UK minus 4, and EU is UK plus 28. UK 12 is US 8 and EU 40.
  • Men’s jackets and suits: UK and US are the same number (chest in inches), and EU is that number plus 10.
  • Men’s trousers: UK and US are the waist in inches, and EU is that number plus 16.
  • Shoes: women’s US is UK plus 2, men’s US is UK plus 1, and EU is roughly UK plus 33 to 35.

Use these for quick mental arithmetic only. The tables below show where published charts depart from them.

Size conversion tables

Every table below is plain HTML, so it can be read, copied and cited without the converter. Values are those that at least two published size guides support. Where guides disagree the table shows a range, and the notes under each table say who disagrees.

Women’s clothing sizes: UK, US, EU, AU, IT and JP

Use this for dresses, tops, coats and most womenswear labelled in numbers. Two rules cover most rows: the US size is the UK size minus 4, and the EU size is the UK size plus 28.

Notes and disagreements

  • US, EU and AU: Next, John Lewis, ASOS and Marks & Spencer publish the same mapping for UK 6 to 24, and Next and John Lewis agree to UK 26. UK 4 rests on Nordstrom and ASOS (EU 32) plus Nordstrom, Joe’s Jeans and Veronica Beard (US 0). ASOS prints US 1 against UK 4; every other source we checked prints US 0. UK 28 rests mainly on Next, so treat that row with extra care.
  • IT: John Lewis and Veronica Beard list Italian sizes as the UK size plus 32, which is what the table shows. Nordstrom and Joe’s Jeans list them two higher for UK 4 to 16 (for example UK 12 as IT 46). Nordstrom keeps that offset up to UK 20, while Joe’s Jeans agrees with the table from UK 20. Italian sizes are the least consistent column here.
  • FR: French sizes match the EU number in the Nordstrom and John Lewis charts, so they share a column. John Lewis prints FR 56 beside EU 54 at UK 26; Joe’s Jeans lists French sizes two lower and Veronica Beard two higher.
  • DE: Marks & Spencer’s chart lists German sizes two below the EU number (German 38 is EU 40 is UK 12). Check whether a label says EU/FR or DE.
  • JP: Nordstrom and Joe’s Jeans agree from UK 4 to UK 20. “–” means our sources do not publish a consistent figure.

Women’s jeans sizes: waist label, US and UK

Women’s jeans are often labelled with a waist number such as W28 or 28. Read it as a brand label in inches, not as a tape measurement of your waist.

Notes and disagreements

  • Joe’s Jeans and Veronica Beard agree on the US and UK equivalents for W24 to W32, and Joe’s Jeans and sizechart.com agree on the US sizes to W34. The US-to-UK step matches the women’s clothing table (UK equals US plus 4). W33 and W34 rest on Joe’s Jeans and sizechart.com for the US size, with the UK size following the same US-to-UK step.
  • There is no EU column because sources disagree: Joe’s Jeans lists French size 32 at W26, sizechart.com lists EU 32 at W26, and Vinted groups W25 to W26 with EU 34. For an EU or French size, take the UK size from this table and use the women’s clothing table.
  • sizechart.com lists UK sizes two higher than the retailers above (W26 as UK 8) and Vinted uses wider groupings (W25 to W26 as UK 4 to 6); we followed the retailer charts. Jeans in particular vary with stretch, rise and cut, so a W28 in one brand can measure differently from a W28 in another.

Notes and disagreements

  • That British Tweed Company, Moss and sizechart.uk all print EU as the UK/US number plus 10. Centimetres come from That British Tweed Company; Moss rounds slightly differently (87 cm at size 34 and 92 cm at size 36), so treat centimetres as accurate to about 1 cm.
  • Letter sizes are not standardised: sizechart.uk maps M to 38 to 40, while Next lists M as a 39 to 41 inch chest. Use the number, not the letter.

Men’s shirt collar sizes: UK, US and EU

Formal shirts are sized by neck (collar) measurement. UK and US collar sizes are the same, in inches. EU shirt sizes are roughly the collar in centimetres, rounded to a whole number.

Notes and disagreements

  • John Lewis and Charles Tyrwhitt (EU site) agree on collar centimetres except at 17 inches, where John Lewis prints 43.5 and Charles Tyrwhitt 43.
  • EU shirt labels are rounded by hand and sources differ: sizechart.uk lists 44 at 17.5 inches and 46 at 18 inches, while Charles Tyrwhitt’s EU “conventional size” column lists 44.5 and 45.5. Sleeve length is a separate measurement and is not converted here.

Men’s trouser sizes: UK, US and EU waist

UK and US trouser sizes are the waist in inches. The EU size is the waist in inches plus 16. Inside leg (short, regular, long) is a second measurement.

Notes and disagreements

  • That British Tweed Company and sizechart.uk agree on the EU numbers. Centimetres come from That British Tweed Company; Next rounds to the nearest half centimetre (81.5 cm at 32 inches, 86.5 cm at 34 inches), so allow about 1 cm either way.
  • This table is for tailored and formal trousers. Jeans and casual trousers are usually labelled with waist and leg length (for example 32 W 32 L) and often run a little larger than the tape measurement.

Women’s shoe sizes: UK, US and EU

For women’s shoes the US size is usually the UK size plus 2, and the EU size is roughly the UK size plus 33 to 34. Where charts differ by a size, both figures are shown.

Notes and disagreements

  • US: Next, Dr. Martens, ASOS, Nike and Johnston & Murphy (via Nordstrom) all print the US women’s size as UK plus 2. Clarks’ US site and John Lewis print it half a size higher (UK 5 as US 7.5). The table follows the majority.
  • EU: UK 4 to UK 6 agree across every source. From UK 7 the sources split: ASOS and John Lewis print EU 40 for UK 7 and EU 41 for UK 8, while Next, Dr. Martens and Clarks print 41 and 42, hence the ranges. Clarks prints its own EU label and a standard EU figure that differ by up to half a size; the table uses the standard column.
  • Half sizes rest on fewer sources (mainly Next, Clarks and Johnston & Murphy; UK 8.5 rests on Clarks and Nike). Shoes vary by last and style, so use foot length in centimetres where a brand publishes it (Clarks and Dr. Martens do).

Men’s shoe sizes: UK, US and EU

For men’s shoes the US size is usually the UK size plus 1, so a US 10 is a UK 9. EU sizes run roughly 34 to 35 above the UK size and differ by up to a whole size between brands.

  • US: Next and Nike both print the US men’s size as UK plus 1 (US 10 as UK 9). John Lewis prints it half a size lower (UK 9 as US 9.5); the table follows the majority.
  • EU: Next, Clarks (standard EU column), Dr. Martens and Nike are within a size of each other, and Nike tends to print the highest figure, hence the ranges. John Lewis is an outlier at UK 7 (EU 40) and UK 12 (EU 46), which the table does not follow. UK 7.5, 8.5, 10.5 and 11.5 rest on two sources each.
  • Foot length in centimetres is the more reliable measurement; Nike, Clarks and Dr. Martens all publish it.

Children’s clothing sizes: age and height

Children’s sizes are labelled by age but cut for a height, and retailers do not cut for the same height. Buy by height in centimetres when you can.

Notes and disagreements

  • From about age 5 to 10, John Lewis prints the top of Next’s height range, so the two agree. At ages 2 to 4 the labels sit about a year apart (Next’s 3-year range of 91 to 96 cm is close to John Lewis’s 2-year 92 cm), and at 14 the sources diverge (John Lewis 164 cm against Next 153 to 158 cm). Teenagers vary a great deal, so treat older ages as a guide only.
  • Both retailers publish chest and waist for each age; check those as well as height.

Why a converted size can still be wrong

Labels drift. Vanity sizing means the same number can describe a larger garment than it did years ago, and brands do not drift at the same pace. A conversion maps one label to another; it cannot know how a particular brand has graded its sizes.

Body measurements and garment measurements are different things. A body chart says which body a size is intended for. A garment chart describes the finished item. Only the first is comparable across brands, and only if both brands say which they are showing.

Ease and cut change the answer. A slim shirt, a relaxed coat and a stretch trouser can all carry the same size label while leaving very different room around the body. Wearing ease (the space between body and fabric), fabric stretch and intended fit all matter.

Here is a worked example. Marks & Spencer lists a UK 12 at a 92 cm bust, 75 cm waist and 100 cm hips. Nordstrom’s designer conversion chart lists US 8, which converts to UK 12, at a 35 inch bust, 27 inch waist and 37.5 inch hips, or about 89, 69 and 95 cm. The labels convert cleanly, yet the waist differs by about 6 cm. That gap is the reason to compare centimetres, not labels.

For product-specific guidance that uses a brand’s own size information, see our overview of a size recommendation app for Shopify. If you run a store and want to test whether size guidance is helping, read how to measure sizing and try-on.

A note for merchants

Shoppers use converters because a size chart did not answer their question. Help them at the source: publish measurements in both centimetres and inches, say whether each table shows body or garment measurements, and add fit notes for each product (cut, stretch, and the height and size the model is wearing). Show the size label shoppers expect in their market, but do not rely on a conversion alone.

Our free size-chart audit reviews a store’s size information for gaps like these, and the size-chart checklist covers the same points in a downloadable list.

Sources and method

We compiled these tables on 29 September 2026 from published retailer and brand size guides. For each table we compared at least two independent sources, and we list them below. A value appears in a table when at least two sources support it. Where sources disagree we show a range or a note, and we do not invent figures to fill gaps: a dash means there was no consistent published figure. Retail guides change, so treat the tables as a snapshot and check the brand’s own page before you buy.

Conversions are approximate, brands vary, and body and garment measurements are different things. Always check the brand’s own measurements in centimetres. The ASOS page was read from an Internet Archive copy because the live page could not be retrieved; sizechart.com, sizechart.uk and Vinted are aggregator or marketplace guides, used as cross-checks rather than as sole evidence.

Size conversion questions

What is a UK size 12 in US sizes?

A UK women’s size 12 is usually a US size 8 and an EU size 40. Next, John Lewis, ASOS and Marks & Spencer all publish this mapping, but the garment itself can still fit differently from brand to brand.

What is an EU size 38 in UK sizes?

In women’s clothing an EU 38 is usually a UK 10 and a US 6. Some charts list German sizes two lower than EU sizes, so a German 38 can be a UK 12. For men’s shirts, an EU 38 is a 15 inch collar.

What is a US men’s size 10 shoe in UK sizes?

A US men’s 10 is usually a UK 9 and roughly an EU 43 to 44. Next and Nike both list the US men’s size as one above the UK size, but EU sizes differ by up to a whole size between brands.

How do women’s UK shoe sizes convert to US and EU?

A UK women’s 5 is normally a US 7 and an EU 38. Most charts list the US women’s size as UK plus 2, although Clarks’ US site and John Lewis list it half a size higher.

How do I convert a men’s suit or jacket size to EU?

UK and US jacket sizes are the same number, which is the chest in inches. Add 10 for the EU size, so a UK or US 40 is an EU 50, which suits a chest of about 102 cm.

Are clothing size converters accurate?

They are approximate. Brands cut and grade differently, labels shift over time and stretch changes fit. Use a conversion to shortlist a size, then compare your own measurements in centimetres with the brand’s size chart and read the fit notes.
