How much does virtual try-on cost?

On Shopify, AI virtual try-on costs from nothing on a free plan to about $90 to $120 a month for 1,000 try-on images, or roughly 9 to 12 cents an image. Tools that add size recommendations cost more, and enterprise platforms run from about $1,000 a month. This page compares the real prices from public listings, the six ways vendors charge, and what building your own costs.

The short answer

  • Photo try-on apps on Shopify: free plans (most with 5 to 25 try-ons a month), paid plans from about $15 to $20, and about $90 to $120 a month for 1,000 try-ons.
  • Size recommendation apps: from about $8 to $50 a month to start, usually priced on orders, users or recommendations rather than images.
  • Combined sizing, outfits and try-on: Rendered Fits is free for one product, then $349 a month for the whole catalogue with 1,000 try-ons.
  • Enterprise sizing platforms: True Fit's Shopify app is $1,000 a month; others quote privately.
  • Building your own on an API: a per-image fee plus the engineering to build and run it.

What 1,000 photo try-ons a month costs

The fairest way to compare try-on apps is to price the same volume. Here is the cheapest way to get 1,000 try-on images a month from each app, using the plans on its listing.

AppPlanMonthly feeTry-onsCost for 1,000

Rendered FitsComplete$3491,000 included; also catalogue-wide sizing and sized outfits$349

For photo try-on alone, most apps land at about $0.09 to $0.12 per image at this volume. Rendered Fits works out at $0.35 per try-on, because the plan also covers size recommendations across the catalogue and outfits with a size for each piece; if you only want the image, a try-on-only app is cheaper. We make Rendered Fits; the full comparison of 17 Shopify apps lists every plan, and the data is in a downloadable CSV.

Costs that are easy to miss

  • Overage. What happens past the included images: a per-image charge, an automatic upgrade, or try-ons that stop. Prefer a cap you set yourself.
  • Branding. Several free and entry plans show the app's name on your store; removing it can mean the next tier up.
  • Revenue caps. Some plans limit the extra revenue they will attribute before you must upgrade.
  • Trial or free plan. A free plan lets you test for as long as you like on a few products; a 7 or 14-day trial is a deadline.
  • Image quality tiers. Pay-per-image apps can charge more for higher-quality images.
  • Your own time. Size recommendations need usable size charts and fit notes. If yours are missing or published as images, budget time to fix them; our guide to making a size chart helps.
  • Sales fees. Check whether any plan takes a percentage of sales or per-order fees on top.

Building your own on a try-on API

A brand with developers can call a try-on model directly and build its own interface. The image itself is cheap; the work around it is not.

At $0.06 an image, 1,000 Google try-ons cost $60 in fees. What the per-image price leaves out:

  • The storefront experience: the button, photo upload, loading states, mobile layout and accessibility.
  • Photo handling and privacy: consent, storage, deletion schedules and a privacy notice for shoppers' photos.
  • Abuse limits: per-visitor and daily caps so a bot cannot run up your bill.
  • Product data: choosing the right product image for each garment, and handling items the model gets wrong.
  • Upkeep: models change and are retired. Google lists a discontinuation date of 20 January 2027 for virtual-try-on-001, so plan for migrations.
  • Sizing: an API returns a picture, not a size. Size advice is a separate build on your size charts.

Building makes sense for a large retailer with an in-house team and unusual needs. For most Shopify brands, an app is cheaper once developer time is counted.

How many try-ons will you need?

Try-on volume depends on product page traffic and how many shoppers press the button, and the second figure varies widely by store, product and button placement. The simplest way to find yours is to measure it:

  1. Install a free plan or trial on a handful of popular products.
  2. After two weeks, divide try-ons by product page views on those products. That is your usage rate.
  3. Multiply your monthly product page views across the catalogue by that rate. Add a margin for sale periods.
  4. Price the plan that covers that number, including overage, in each app on your shortlist.

The try-on cost calculator works out the Rendered Fits plan for a given volume, and the break-even calculator shows what the tool would need to change to pay for itself.
